Ever wondered what is sterling silver? What does that even mean? Sterling Silver means 92.5% of the mass is silver and 7.5% is a mass of other metals, usually copper. If it was solid silver, it would be too soft, tarnish too quickly and not be durable. So the “sterling silver international standard of 92.5” means it has the exact ratio of the metal it needs to make it easier to work with. It is also stronger and lasts longer.

If you see the words silver plated, that means it only has a coating of sterling silver. It won’t keep its colour so well and the coating can rub off. Silver plated is much cheaper and it won’t last. Whereas sterling silver can always be polished back to a new condition.

When you buy silver jewellery from us, we can guarantee it is just that. If you sanded it with some sandpaper, it would be real silver all the way through! We don’t of course advise that, unless you then want to do lots of polishing and buffing to get back its shine!

Fine silver, for example 99.9% pure silver, is relatively soft, so silver is usually alloyed with copper to increase its hardness and strength. Sterling silver is prone to tarnishing, and elements other than copper can be used in alloys to reduce tarnishing, as well as casting porosity and firescale.
